Fever is when the normal body temperature goes higher than the range of 36-37° Celsius. As the temperature goes up the person feels cold and dizzy.

Fever can be an alarming sign of another disease condition growing inside the human body. It can be a part of the response to disease. 

Fever may be beneficial to the body and sometimes, there can be any kind of infection or uneven health conditions inside the body.

It plays an important role in helping the body fight the disease particularly infections.

Fever comes with cold and leaves your body with sweat.

The temperature of a normal human body can vary after some activities like eating, exercise & sleeping.

According to Medical News Today report, our body has the lowest temperature at 3 AM and highest at 6 PM.

Fever also termed as pyrexia and hyperthermia.

SYMPTOMS

When someone has a fever there are some signs and symptoms present according to the linked disease condition.

  • Fever comes with a chill.
  • Feeling cold
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of appetite 
  • Dehydration
  • Confusion 
  • Hallucination
  • Irritability
  • Conclusions or seizures if the fever is high.
  • General weakness

CAUSES

Variable factors mentioned here can cause fever.

  • Any kind of infection (Bacteria or Parasite) such as streptococcal infection throat, flu, chickenpox, or pneumonia in such condition the heat-regulating system resulting in high heat and fever. 
  • Hyperthyroidism 
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Medications
  • Overexposure of skin to sunlight or sunburn
  • Heatstroke, resulting either by exposure to high temperatures or prolonged strenuous exercise.
  • Dehydration
  • Silicosis
  • Amphetamine abuse
  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • AIDS

FEVER SEVERITY

  • Low grade, from 100.5–102.1°F or 38.1–39°C
  • Moderate, from 102.2–104.0°F or 39.1–40°C
  • High, from 104.1–106.0°F to or 40.1-41.1°C
  • Hyperpyrexia, above 106.0°F or 41.1°C

KINDS OF FEVER

Fever can be

  • Acute if it lasts less than 7 days
  • Sub-acute if it lasts up to 15 days
  • Chronic or persistent, if it persists for over 14 days

Fevers that exist for days or weeks with no explanation are called fevers of undetermined origin (FUO).

DIAGNOSIS

 It is important to take the person’s temperature with a thermometer.

A person is known to have a fever if:

The temperature may vary according to the locations

  • The temperature in the mouth is over 37.7° Centigrade (99.9° Fahrenheit).
  • Temperature in the rectum (anus) is over 37.5 – 38.3° Centigrade (100–101 Fahrenheit).
  • The temperature under the arm or inside the ear is over 37.2 Centigrade (99 Fahrenheit).

Fever is a sign, not a disease, when the doctor has confirmed there is a rise in body temperature, certain diagnostic tests may be ordered. Depending on what other signs and symptoms associated with the probable cause of fever. These may include blood tests, urine tests, X-rays, or other imaging scans, LFT, ELISA etc.

TREATMENT 

When your doctor diagnosed you with the fever he will prescribe medication according to your overall signs and symptoms.

Your doctor may recommend you

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen. We know these as antipyretic medicines, they can help bring a fever down.

If a bacterial infection causes the fever, the doctor may prescribe an antibiotic.

If a fever is caused by cold, which is caused by a viral infection, NSAIDs can relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

Anyone with a fever should consume plenty of fluids. Fluid therapy can be intravenous to prevent dehydration. Dehydration will complicate any illness and can lead to hypovolemic shock.

PREVENTION

Fevers are commonly caused by bacterial or viral infections. Good hygiene habits help to reduce the risk of developing an infection. 

This includes hand-washing before and after meals, and after going to the toilet.

Use of clean clothes and clean utensils.

A person with a fever caused by an infection should have as little contact as possible with other people, to prevent the infection from spreading. 

Whoever is caring for the patient should regularly wash their hands with antibacterial warm soap and water.
